Umbilical cord blood cells are used in BMT for almost two decades to replace other sources of stem cells such as bone marrow and mobilized blood around. About 20,000 transplants are performed on cord blood cells, compared to about 45,000 transplants done annually worldwide by using other sources of cells. There are some limitations of umbilical cord blood, but on the other hand, there are also significant benefits. The limit is now gradually overcome with the introduction of new technologies such as expansion of stem cells or using multiple units of the chain of each patient. Still, the question remains, how effective is aulologous transplant (patient received his own cells) compared with allogeneic transplant (the patient receives cells from another donor, which is found in samples from public cord blood bank).
For many but not all hematologic malignancies, it is better to use allogeneic transplant for the anti-tumor effect appears to be stronger as a combination. If yes, why would a parent store with his child’s cells? The answer is that BMT indications, stem cells from umbilical cord blood can be used for family members as well. In this case, the allogeneic combination with other benefits of umbilical cord blood cells, making it worthwhile to save and use as needed. Additionally, a donor is not always easy to find, and therefore the stored antilogous cells present in this case is a good alternative.
