Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that comes from the spirochetal bacterium Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. Untreated, it can cause serious health problems and increase a person’s venture of acquiring the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that leads to AIDS.
Before the arrival of serological testing, it was hard to diagnose pox and the disease was erst called the Great Imitator because it mimicked other diseases in its tertiary stage. The symptoms of the prototypal stage of the disease (primary syphilis) commonly materialize digit to 12 weeks after sexual contact with an infected person.
A harmless flushed sore called a chancre may materialize on the genitals at the place where the infection occurred. The patient may have super lymph nodes or swollen glands. Depending on the kind of sexual contact, a chancre may also materialize on the representative or in the rectal area.
Chancres transmit the disease between people but they are not recognized until it’s too late. These heal in threesome to sextet weeks even without any treatment but the disease enters the second stage which is called secondary syphilis. This often starts weeks to months after the chancre appears.
As pox bacterium enter the bloodstream and spread, they cause many symptoms like rashes or small flushed spots, fever, headache, loss of appetite and weight loss. Other symptoms are sore throat, muscle aches, joint pain, ill feeling, and enlarged lymph nodes.
The rash of secondary pox can become on the palms, soles, trunk, arms and legs. Gray or white wart-like patches of skin called condylomata may materialize on dewy areas near the mouth, anus and vagina. These lesions are filled with bacterium and are extremely contagious. At this stage, pox may also change the liver, kidneys, and eyes or cause meningitis.
The disease can be treated in its early stages with antibiotics. To prevent syphilis, refrain sexual contact with infected people and get screened for STDs regularly.
